Bitter Boy
(Rich Mullins, 1977)
You found me a bitter boy mostly motivated
By rhymes and once-upon-a-times just remotely related
Sorry for myself for having lost my brother's trust
when he saw through my little white lies and unkept promises.
But, what was there you ever saw in me
that caused such love as I have known in You?
When I'm not worthy to even breathe the air I do?
How is it you spread Your feast before me in the presence of my enemies?
Love overflows in me! And, in Your wisdom I've found peace.
And, I ain't cryin', Ma! And, I ain't lyin', Pa!
And, you'll be so glad to know, you all,
that the boy who had to crawl is flyin'!
You found me a bitter boy, mostly motivated
by wishing well fantasies just remotely related.
How wide, and high and deep Your love must be, I cannot grasp.
For the power to begin to do so, my Lord, I ask.
And, out of all the lines I write I'll only find a few
ever in a lifetime I think are fit to give to You
But for Your grace I have no songs to offer up in praise
For all my music has come from finding comfort in Your grace.
